  1.  All published websites on the internet have a unique web address aka URL aka Domain name, in ex Google.com , Yahoo.com or CNN.com. All domain names are registered with a Domain Name Server (DNS) which identifies the chosen domain name with a series of numbers so called I.P-addresses (Internet Protocol). They look something like: 192.0.2.25 (Google.com).  This I.P-address then routes the user to a web server. It’s on that web server that a web hosting company provides space which you can upload all your files and images to.
  2. As we mentioned before you have to have register a domain name first. There are some hosting alternatives where you do not need have a domain name for your site, but those services will give you a sub-domain for you which can be both harder to spell and pronounce. An example is MyVacationBlog.Blogspot.com (BlogSpot is owned by Google). Instead you want to have your very own domain name like MyVacationBlog.com.
  3. To see if your domain name are available; we suggest either visit REGISTRAR 1 or REGISTRAR 2.
  4. Prices for a one year registration fee vary but are usually $7-$15. It is okay to register your domain name with one registrar and have your hosting separated at another. As long as you give the proper DNS settings with your hosting company everything will work like a charm.
  5. Choose a proper web hosting plan with enough space. If you like most people only have a few pages on a personal blog or company website, most web hosting providers will give you enough bandwidth and space. Many web hosting companies even gives the domain name for free if you opt in for hosting as well. When you have chosen between Windows or Linux Hosting (Linux is generally cheaper) it’s time to know what to publish.
  6. What to publish. What is your overall goal with your website? Is it to sell something, blog about something or do you just need a static company website? Are there any designers that can do the website for you, or will you be doing the website design yourself? Most companies use an automated publishing tool what is referred to as a Content Management System (CMS). The benefit of such a system is that it removes the coding part. It’s like a turnkey solution to get started on the web. The most common CMS out there today are : Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal. Remember to choose a web hosting company that has your preferred CMS support built in already. This will save you an enormous amount of time. The most common platform today is Wordpress.
  7. Wordpress will do most of the uploading for you automatically, however in some rare cases you might want to upload a file or text outside the CMS. In such events,  you will the need an FTP-program to upload your content to your website. We recommend that you use Filezilla, which is based on an open source platform and hence is for free.

By now, you should have your website up and running. Good job!
